Final agreements have been signed between Newam Power Company Ltd of Madras and US wind turbine manufacturer Kenetech Corporation for the sale and construction of a 50 MW wind farm in the province of Tamil Nadu, it was announced on June 19. Newam is an electric power development company. The turnkey project will consist of 125 of Kenetech's Model KVS-33 turbines, to be assembled in India by Kenetech's newly formed subsidiary, Kenetech India Private Ltd. The turbines will be shipped unassembled from the US. The Indian subsidiary will also build, operate, and maintain the project. Construction will start this year, and commercial operation in early 1996, says Kenetech's Bud Grebey.
