Siemens has secured its third contract for supply of its 3.6 MW wind turbines to an offshore wind power plant in the UK. The project sponsor, Danish company DONG Energy, has ordered 30 turbines for its 108 MW Gunfleet Sands wind farm off England's south-east coast. The order comes four months after DONG bought the project from former owner GE Energy. The total investment in the wind farm is expected to be EUR 270 million. "With the latest order from the UK, we are consolidating our leading position in the rapidly expanding offshore market," says Andreas Nauen from the wind division of Siemens in Denmark. Construction of the project, sited seven kilometres off the town of Clacton-on-Sea, some 80 miles northeast of London, is scheduled to begin in 2009. In the UK, Siemens is currently working on the Burbo Banks wind farm off the west coast of Britain and next year will build two offshore wind stations with a maximum capacity of 180 MW at Lynn and Inner Dowsing, 100 miles to the north of Gunfleet Sands.
