World power leader

Germany has now overtaken the United States as world leader in wind power, reports the country's Bundesverband WindEnergie. "With a total capacity of 2079 MW Germany has become number one world wide," says the association's Andreas Wagner. "The United States, global leader until 1996, has only seen stagnation during the past few years," he adds. "Total installation in the US is 1601 MW." Last year also marked a record volume of new wind installations in Germany -- 531.5 MW, compared with 488.9 MW in 1995, and 445.2 MW in 1996.
