British firm IW Power develops wind project portfolio totalling more than 2000 MW

IW Power Co Ltd (IWP), an offshoot of Britain's long established Wind Prospect, is developing a portfolio of projects in China with a combined capacity in excess of 2000 MW, with 600 MW of these in provincial level planning processes," says the company's James Pennay. The venture is a partnership with Chinese engineering company Insigma. The 600 MW comprises a 400 MW project at Qian'an in Jilin Province and a 200 MW project planned for Changxingdao near Dalian City, Liaoning Province. "We are seeking planning approval for 49.5 MW phases at both sites initially, with the hope that approval will be received for these sites in the coming months, resulting in construction over 2008-2009," Pennay says. Projects under 50 MW only require local authority approval and do not also have to be approved by central government. In addition, IWP is helping Wind Prospect with operations supervision of seven operating UK wind plant with a combined capacity of 68 MW. "IWP and Wind Prospect are working in collaboration to reduce the cost base for operations by expanding the services offered through the 24/7 control centre in China," says Pennay. "This has enabled a far greater depth of analysis, hence the wind farms are operated in a more proactive and effective manner."
