For wind turbines insured with two Dutch insurance companies, Delta Lloyd and Amersfoortse, the own risk clause for lightning damage has been increased to NLG 25,000. The reason for the increase, say both insurance companies is that the cost of lightning damage far exceeds the income from the insurance premium. The new ruling hits the members of two regional wind co-operatives, VWF and WEB of Friesland, particularly hard. Their collective policy was changed overnight. VWF has found a new insurance company in Praevenio. WEB has agreed on a new policy with the Amersfoortse under which the owner's risk of NLG 25,000 is compensated for through a solidarity fund among turbine owners. But it would take only one bolt of lightning to strike home to empty the fund.
