Three new energy agencies are being set up in Germany, assigned with the task of promoting renewable energies and rational use of energy. The three agencies -- in Mecklenburg, Freiburg and Stuttgart -- are beneficiaries of funds from a program with nearly ECU 5 million made available from the EU Save program. They set up 16 regional and 17 municipal local offices, each with a starter sum of ECU 150,000 for the first three years. The purpose, of these offices, according to the European Commission, is to raise awareness of the effects of energy use among regional and local authorities and transfer the new found knowledge to all areas of politics. The 33 new energy offices raises the total number now spread across Europe to 173.
