The Department of Trade and Industry is commissioning its own public attitude survey on wind energy, says energy minister John Battle. The DTI hopes to collaborate with an independent environmental organisation to produce a study that is current, authoritative and neutral. It will be conducted in two separate regions -- a "control area" of no wind farms and an area where there are several. Battle is concerned that the true level of public support for wind is not being translated into favourable planning decisions on wind farm applications. "The survey we hope will provide up-to-date public perceptions of wind energy, which should inform both planners and developers alike," he says.
