Air quality research

A joint research programme is to identify ways of improving the air quality in the Erzgebirge hills, which form a natural border between the Czech Republic and south east Germany. Sulphur emissions from lignite mining are the main problem. One of the areas to be investigated is the use of renewable energies. The first phase of the project -- a description of emissions and their effects as well as remedying measures taken so far -- should be complete this spring.x
