More than 1300 MW of new wind power capacity was developed during the past 12 months, bringing the world total to over 7000 MW. Never before has the annual rate of development been greater. Most activity was in wind's traditional European markets, though Italy got seriously onto the wind map in 1997, Spain moved into third place in Europe and China's installed capacity increased by a factor of three.
