Calais is considering the installation of three 300 kW wind turbines to power its new waste water treatment system. The city council has initiated wind measurements which are expected to reveal a substantial resource. Calais is close to the Cap Gris Nez, one of the windiest sites in France. On the northern coast, it faces the port of Dover across the English Channel. Financial support for the project is being sought from the European Commission and the Nord-Pas de Calais Region. Calais is one of the few large cities in France which remains under a Communist local government. Their majority depends, however, on the support of the Green Party.
