Government support of Eurppean policy paper
1 June 1997
Britain's new government has already pledged its support for the European Commission's green paper on renewable energy sources, discussed at a conference in Athens last month (see pages 42-47). "Renewables must move out of the margins and have a greater role as part of a diverse and sustainable long term energy supply," Battle said before attending his first Energy Council meeting in Brussels on May 27. By backing renewables, the government is dealing with the problem of climate change and securing new markets for European industry, he added. "We must make a start to exploring with our European partners how to open up markets for renewables."
