Technology from the Windicator
1 July 2004
Wind turbines continue to get bigger and incorporate innovative ideas for increasing energy yield. Indicative of wind's growing role in power supply, provision of transmission is now a major issue -- when and where does it pay to invest in line upgrades? System operators also worry that increasing volumes of wind are a potential source of grid instability, not because of the variability of the wind, but because large numbers of machines might trip out in response to a grid fault. Debate is fierce on whether new grid codes are too stringent, but is leading to more sophisticated generators and control systems in wind turbines.
