The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking bids to design, manufacture and test new 12 metre and 21 metre blades from its thick airfoil family. Notice of a Request for Proposals (RFP) was given in January. The programme's goal is to develop low cost, long life blades for three bladed turbines rated from 250-600 kW. One or two $100,000 awards may be made for an application and requirements survey along with aerodynamic and structural design of the blades. Then $300,000 would be available for each of the one or two chosen recipients for the tooling and for four copies of the blades for atmospheric and structural testing. Companies are expected to provide a minimum of 30% cost-sharing.
