Government wind for nuclear campaign
1 July 1999
In an advertising campaign, the German government is saying that wind will replace nuclear power in Germany. In a printed advertisement from the ministry of environment, nature protection and reactor safety, Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit, the symbol for radioactivity transforms into a spinning wind turbine rotor against a black background. "The wind has turned-atomic energy is a discontinued model. The sun and wind are to supply energy for the next century: safely, efficiently-and renewable," states the text. The government and utilities have reached a framework agreement on the phasing out of nuclear power by 2021. Each of Germany's 19 nuclear stations would be closed after a 35 year maximum operating life.
