America's wind lobby group will launch a new wind magazine, possibly as early as this year. The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) will start a publication, in a magazine format with photographs, to communicate the wind industry's perspective. AWEA's executive director Randy Swisher says it could be launched this year or next, as a quarterly or bimonthly -- every two months -- but not a monthly, at least in the short term. Rumours had emerged that AWEA was considering a magazine as a direct competitor to Windpower Monthly, with advertisements from overseas wind companies. This was partly because it was uneasy about Windpower Monthly's critical stance on some issues, such as birds and technology problems. Swisher, however, maintains AWEA's magazine has been discussed for four years and it is a natural progression in a maturing trade association. He says the two magazines would also have different purposes. "I wouldn't see one displacing the other." Even so, AWEA's plans were clearly not meant for publication. An AWEA spokesperson initially reacted with surprise that plans for the magazine were known about and downplayed the proposal as extremely preliminary.
