Turbine manufacturers Vestas of Denmark and Gamesa of Spain top a newly published list of the leading 15 publicly traded renewable energy companies in terms of market capitalisation. Launched by the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (IWR) in Munster, Germany, on May 1, the Renewable Energy Industrial Index (Renixx) is designed as a company performance index. "It provides an industrial market barometer at international level to reflect the highly dynamic development within this sector," says IWR's Norbert Allnoch. It is calculated every 60 seconds and is published on IWR's web site. According to Allnoch, his top 15 firms have the highest market capitalisation of around 60 listed renewable energy companies around the world which earn more than half their revenues in the renewables sector, have most of their shares in "free float" and are not majority government-owned. Together the 15 firms represent around 900 million traded shares. Clipper Windpower of the US and Germany's Nordex also make the list, in 13th and 15th position, respectively. Suzlon Energy, the wind turbine company with by far the largest market capitalisation (Windpower Monthly Equity Index, April 2006), is not included in Renixx because only 10% of its shares are in free float.
