Mitsubishi forms joint venture for exclusive supply of gearboxes

Next month in Japan, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is to solidify a joint venture partnership with Ishibashi Manufacturing for the supply of gearboxes for Mitsubishi's wind turbines. The venture will set up a new plant adjacent to Ishibashi's main gearbox plant in Nogata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and launch production in 2010 for two models of MHI's 2.4 MW turbines. All gearboxes to be produced at the plant will be supplied to MHI. Ishibashi has provided gearboxes for Mitsubishi's 600 kW, 1 MW and 2.4 MW wind turbines since 1999, a total of 2000 units up the close of the last fiscal year, which ended March 31, 2007. Mitsubishi says it has been receiving more orders for turbines than it can produce. In America Mitsubishi ramped up from 128 MW in 2006 to 356 MW last year.
