1 November 2007
August saw Portugal's installed wind capacity pass the 2000 MW threshold, says the Portuguese Association of Renewable Energies. Wind power now meets 8% of the country's electricity needs a year, forecast to grow to 15% in 2010. According to the country's energy directorate, wind plant totalling a further 3345 MW have been granted licences. It also notes electricity production from wind farms in the first seven months of this year was up 69% on the same period last year. The leading wind districts are Viseu (with 389 MW installed), Coimbra (256 MW) and Castelo Branco (211 MW), followed by Lisbon (193 MW), Vila Real (169 MW), Santarem (150 MW), Leiria (149 MW) and Braga (121 MW).
