A textbook wind project in Wisconsin
1 August 2001
FPL Energy's 30 MW Montfort wind farm near Eden, Wisconsin, swung into full operation last month, becoming the largest wind facility in the state. The output from the 20, 1.5 MW Enron turbines is being sold to Wisconsin Electric-Wisconsin Gas, a subsidiary of Wisconsin Energy Corporation, and Alliant Energy's Wisconsin Power and Light. Enron had gained a construction permit from county officials in October and sold the project to FPL early this year. FPL has had difficulty siting another Wisconsin project on the outskirts of Addison. In contrast, "The Montfort project was textbook perfect from start to finish," says FPL's Lew Hay. "From clean, efficient energy to an improved tax base and totally compatible land use, it has been an excellent demonstration of the mutual benefits to be realised when communities actively partner with project developers." In contrast, the Addison wind farm has been downsized due to community opposition and is still awaiting a county conditional use permit after nearly two years of local bickering.
