Two meteorological towers are being installed on the Caribbean island of St Kitts in the early stages of what may become a 20 MW wind farm. As is the case on many islands in the region, the wind resources are modest, but the St Kitts government has taken a strong interest in renewables, says Nikki Schonfeld of Florida-based Wind Energy Consulting and Contracting (WECC). Because of the high cost of shipping fossil fuels to the island by barge, wind power may prove to be cheaper she says. WECC is cooperating with developer North Star International on the project. As a goodwill gesture, WECC is sharing its meteorological data with schools as part of a renewable energy education program.
