An extensive evaluation of the Baltic Sea wind energy resource has found it to be better than indicated. Birgitta Källstrand from Uppsala university has studied the area in detail, discovering the significance of "low-level jet winds." Meteorologist Hans Bergström has also found interesting results in northern mountain wind studies. In some valley locations, "tunnel effects" make winds stronger than expected -- even stronger than on mountain tops, he says. At the same time the wind conditions can vary radically within just a few miles.
