Artistry in Aumelas

At Aumelas, in the Herault département of southwest France, Parisian artist Chantal Sanier is transforming 11 Repower 2 MW turbines inaugurated in July into works of art. Sanier owns a property nearby and admits she was unhappy when the project was first announced. But she began wondering if it was possible to reconcile a hundred metres of steel with the beauty of the arid plateau on which they stand.

The theme she chose is transformation, from the creation of the earth and the first appearance of life to a soaring bird. Sanier works suspended from the nacelle while she paints the designs, 30 metres high and 12 metres in circumference. And the idea is catching on. Sanier's next commission is to paint four turbines to be installed at Marseille port by La Compagnie de Vent. This time, however, she will be able to work on the towers before they are installed.
