New blade factory brings hope to depressed area

Eight-hundred people have applied for the first 250 positions in the new Vestas blade factory, which is expected to open for production at the former Nakskov shipyard in autumn (Windpower Monthly, February 1999). The job openings seem to have brought a ray of hope to the harbour town on the island of Lolland, economically depressed since a large shipyard was shut down. The unemployment level, now at 12%, has been as high as 20%. Vestas is moving into at least two of the former shipyard's buildings, the company reports.
