KENETECH INJECTING $100,000 ANNUALLY
1 June 1995
Aiming to establish an international and "editorially balanced publication to represent the wind industry," the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) is proposing to re-launch its journal, Wind Directions, as a monthly magazine with California wind company Kenetech injecting $100,000 annually as the project's major sponsor. According to an internal memorandum, the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) and EWEA will jointly contribute £25,000 a year, with £65,000 offered by Kenetech's president, Gerry Alderson -- representing some 72% of editorial influence. The memorandum was prepared by David Lindley, current editor of Wind Directions and managing director of the UK's largest wind plant developer, National Wind Power. He states the industry mouthpiece would remain under his "general direction and editorial control." The magazine's staff would operate from BWEA's London offices and additional income is anticipated from advertising, subscriptions and possibly from the American Wind Energy Association, which has been asked to contribute an initial $100,000 and $50,000 annually. Furthermore, "Gerry Alderson is willing to take the lead in obtaining other support from the USA," according to the memorandum. Interestingly, it seems Lindley is hoping for annual support from European taxpayers for this industry PR initiative. "We could expect at least £12,000," he states. He also suggests that a grant of ECU 320,000, requested from the EU for preparation of an updated wind energy strategy for Europe, "would provide additional income to the Wind Directions company" and its lobbying activities.
