During the five years that the Windicator has been charting developments in the industry, worldwide capacity has increased by a factor of four. Last year, capacity increased by about 6765 MW, returning one of the highest growth rates ever -- 38%. In 2001, strong performances, as usual, were registered by Germany and Spain. American growth was also substantial. Other star performers were Italy and Greece and Japan. All these markets look set for sustained growth this year, with the possible exception of Italy. Markets to look out for are Australia, Portugal, Norway, Ireland, potentially Canada and China and possibly regions of Latin America. India could yet surprise us. Bullish projections of future growth by the industry are supported by market analysts who have produced a rash of reports in the first three months of the year.
