Ontario Hydro pushes off-grid wind.

-

As well as its main Renewable Energy Technology programme, Ontario Hydro is also promoting an off-grid remote wind turbine programme. Three 10 kW Bergey turbines were installed in September at Kasabonika Lake; one 50 kW Atlantic Orient Corp (AOC) unit is being installed at Big Trout Lake and there are other installations in Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories . A 50 kW AOC or an 80 kW Lagerwey is planned for mid-1997 at Fort Severn, where a 60 kW Howden turbine may be restored. Wind mapping projects are also underway at other locations, adds Ontario Hydro's Brian Kelly. The utility has refurbished a number of American Enertech and Danish Windmatic turbines, uprooted from California and is working on self-erecting towers for 30-200 kW turbines.
