An Environment Effects Statement (EES) on Wind Power Pty's proposed Wonthaggi Wind Farm has been completed, bringing the 10.5 MW project closer to reality. The company hopes to install six 1.75 MW wind turbines on rural property just to the west of Wonthaggi in South Gippsland, Victoria. They will generate sufficient power for over 6000 local families and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 41,000 tonnes a year. The EES study found the wind farm will not obstruct views or affect access, wilderness quality or recreation values. "The effect on tourism values will be positive," it says. If all necessary approvals are received, Wind Power hopes the A$20 million wind farm will be operational by the end of they year. It also hopes to involve the community by setting up the Wonthaggi Wind Farm Co-op and inviting local people to buy shares.
