THE US NAVY CONSIDERS TURBINES ON THREE ISLANDS

The US Navy, with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, is considering installing wind turbines on three islands with military and radar operations off southern California. "We're trying to reduce diesel usage to comply with EPA smog restrictions, which are becoming increasingly strict in southern California," says US Navy project engineer Ron Vincent. The Environmental Protection Agency oversees, among other things, air quality. The islands of Santa Cruz, San Clemente and San Nicolas, used for training and testing, are small. Average power requirements are only about 1 MW on San Clemente, the largest of the three. All are currently reliant on diesel power.
