Scotland's second wind farm
1 October 1996
Electricity began flowing in August from Scotland's second wind farm when the first of 18 wind turbines were commissioned on Gallow Rig -- an exposed ridge in Dumfries and Galloway. The commissioning of the 600 kW Nordtank turbines marked the completion of the first half of Windy Standard wind farm -- a 20 MW joint venture between National Wind Power and shipping line Fred Olsen Ltd. A further 18 turbines are still under construction on Polwhat Rig. This second half of the project is due to begin generating in October and the wind farm will be completed in November.
