A final power purchase agreement for a 20 MW wind farm should be signed with the national utility of Costa Rica this autumn. The 20 MW wind project would be jointly developed by US company Kenetech Windpower Inc and Merrill International Ltd. To be built in Guanacastle Province, it is the first of several anticipated stages of wind energy development. Government approval to build was received last year. Construction is scheduled for early 1995. Power from the plant, to consist of about 20 33M-VS turbines, will be bought by Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad, the central American country's utility. Sponsorship is by Charter Oak Energy Inc, a non-utility subsidiary of Northeast Utilities Inc of Hartford, Connecticut, in the US.
