Utility EDON has begun work on the long awaited retrofit of its Eemsmond wind farm of Kenetech turbines near Delfzijl in Groningen. In early March new rotors made by Dutch blade firm Aerpac were fitted to the first of the 94 Kenetech 33M-VS (NL) turbines scheduled for overhaul. The Kenetech machines will also be modified to remedy defects in the gear boxes which have affected at least nine of the 94 turbines installed in 1995. The NLG 10 million retrofit program is being supervised by EDON subsidiary, Traedon Utilities and is due for completion in August. On completion EDON hopes it will have put an end to the series of mechanical failures which have prevented the 34 MW farm consistently from achieving its targeted production of 73 million kWh a year.
