Lower Saxony has passed an amendment to its Nature Protection Law with two benefits for wind energy. Firstly, small wind plant, of five turbines and less,have been exempted from the paragraph in the law which requires that anybody building in the countryside must compensate for the environmental damage they cause. The amendment came just in time to rescue the owner of an 18 kW turbine from having to purchase and plant 2500 bushes as landscape compensation. Secondly, wind projects have also been given special privilege under the law. Registered environment groups may lodge protests against any construction planned for the open countryside -- but not any longer against .
