Solar energy enterprise zone critical

The "solar energy enterprise zone" in the north-western state of Rajasthan has reached a critical juncture. Its multinational developers, Amoco and Enron, are, according to state officials, "not meeting financial criteria," say Rajasthan officials. In March 1996 a foundation stone was laid for setting up the first 50 MW solar power project at Sanu village in the Thar desert. Dust storms have since blown down the unfinished power house. A model of a solar panel and a water pumping wind turbine is all that remains. Rajasthan officials will soon decide whether to continue with the project or cancel it.
