Media tide turning

Hopes within Britain's wind industry that the media tide may be turning in favour of a balanced debate on wind energy were given an added impetus in mid October by BBC television's Countryfile programme. In a welcome rational treatment of wind energy in Wales both sides were allowed to put their case. Although some may regret that the more outrageous claims of anti-wind farm lobby group Country Guardian were not examined, the wind industry and Friends of the Earth put up a robust defence of wind. The BBC was careful not to take sides, but presenter Rachel Morgan commented that the debate was becoming a bitter one -- " energised by misunderstanding and misinformation." And she warned: "Across the country [the wind industry] is losing the war. The fact remains that the majority of its applications are being turned down. Unless a truce is called wind power may not have a future at all."
