Asia's first wind-diesel hybrid project has been inaugurated in Sagar Island in the Sundarbans in West Bengal. The $1.25 million demonstration project, only the third in the world, was funded by MNES and implemented by the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency. It will light up six villages in Sagar Island, which has a population of nearly 200,000 but no access to an electricity grid. The wind-diesel hybrid has a capacity of 175 x 2 kW using the diesel mode and 110 kW of wind power capacity. Similar projects will be set up in Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands "depending on the viability of the Sundarbans project," says MNES.
