Undersea Baltic cable proposed to get to population centres

Achim Berge of wind project developer WPD Scandinavia has proposed a 1100 kilometre undersea Baltic cable connecting the windy far-north Swedish city of Luleå with the port-town of Gävle. Berge has formed a group that includes ABB and Gothia Power as well as the Swedish wind power association and has opened discussions with the Swedish grid operator Svenska Kraftnätt. Though it would be a vast undertaking, Berge says it is not only the best way to get new wind power from the north, where a majority of new projects are being developed, to Stockholm and the populated cities of the south, it is the only way the Swedish offshore wind potential is truly going to be realised.
