Germany's wind market growth rate increased by nearly 60% last year compared with 2000, according to national wind association Bundesverband Windenergie (BWE). With another 2659 MW on-line in 2001, provided by 2079 single units, German wind energy expanded as never before -- adding 1000 MW more in a single year than it managed in 2000 when capacity grew by 1668 MW. The total number of turbines in Germany is 11,500, as of end-2001, amounting to a combined capacity of 8750 MW, says BWE. The organisation estimates the capacity added in Germany could be about half of the worldwide increase in 2001 of around 5000 MW. "In view of the forecasts of German wind development companies, another 5000 MW could go on-line on land by the end of 2004," says BWE's Peter Ahmels.
