Finland's largest wind power generator, Hyötytuuli Oy -- "Efficient Wind," formerly "Urban Wind" -- is planning to build a 20 MW offshore wind farm near Pori on the west coast. A pre-feasibility study has begun, according to Esa Holttinen of Ekono Energy. Involved in the study is Mauri Määttänen from Helsinki University of Technology, one of the leading experts in the design of offshore structures exposed to heavy ice loads. Also involved is Aker Mäntyluoto, a local offshore oil rig supplier which is part of offshore industry giant Aker Maritime. If realised, the turbines will be installed earliest 2003. International partners are being sought for the second phase of the study. Meanwhile, Hyötytuuli is considering an extension of its present 8 MW wind farm with a couple of 2 MW units.
