Green Olympics scores C
1 September 2000
Sydney's "green Olympics" has scored a "C," or a six out of ten from Greenpeace for its environmental achievements. One of the "wins" is a decision to buy green power for an estimated 38 million kWh peak load for the duration of the event. Energy Australia is supplying the power under its Pure Energy scheme. Details supplied for two of the main venues, Stadium Australia and The Superdome, break the mix down to wind (0.2%), solar (0.25%), hydro (13.2%) and biomass (86%). Arrangements for other venues are still being finalised. The wind component is being sourced from a Vestas 600 kW turbine at Kooragang Island near Newcastle.
