Powerful claim in Scotland
1 May 1998
ScottishPower has lodged an application to build the UK's "most powerful wind farm." Fifty turbines totalling 30 MW are planned for Beinn an Tuirc in mid Kintyre. Although not the largest wind farm in the UK, it would be capable of producing more electricity than any other, claims the company. This is due to favourable wind conditions, turbine number and location, and modern design. The project is one of two with power purchase contracts won by the company under last year's Scottish Renewables Obligation -- SRO 2. According to ScottishPower, the site was one of the best of 200 that it surveyed for wind quality. The company claims that surveys conducted last year show that most local people are in favour of the £20 million wind farm. It will create 60 jobs during construction and bring in £100,000 each year to the local economy. The plans are now being considered by Argyll and Bute Council. If given the go-ahead, it could be operational by 2000.
