Italian offshore legislative incentives
1 December 2008
An amendment to Italian energy legislation currently being examined in parliament would significantly improve incentive payments for offshore wind power production. The plan is to award offshore wind power producers 1.6 green certificates for every megawatt hour generated, up from a proposed 1.1 green certificates. Onshore wind gets one certificate for each MWh. Certificates are sold for a reference price determined by the electricity regulator to boost revenues from electricity sales. Wind developers have argued that the incentives on offer for offshore wind power have been insufficient to catalyse a market. Italy currently has no offshore wind plant feeding power to the grid, although there are around a dozen projects at various stages in the authorisation process.
