Bosch-Rexroth's factory for manufacturing gearboxes for multi-megawatt wind turbines officially opened for business at the end of April in Nürnberg, Bavaria. Production of ring gears and planetary wheels for gearboxes began in January at the EUR 120 million works, with assembly starting in March. This year, the factory, which employs about 280 people, is expected to produce around 300 gearboxes for wind turbines with rated capacities up to 2.5 MW, expanding in 2010 to produce gearboxes for 3 MW turbines. An expected EUR 60 million investment in the business up to 2013 could see an increase in the workforce to about 700 employees, although the company has not revealed details of eventual output capacity. The factory adds to Bosch-Rexroth's existing gearbox manufacturing plant at Witten in North-Rhine Westfalia and to a gearbox production facility that it opened in Beijing, China last year. "In the near future we also intend to set up a local presence in the USA," says Bosch-Rexroth's Reiner Leipold-Büttner.
