Strong Nympsfield support for development
1 March 1999
More than two-thirds of residents from the Stroud area in Gloucestershire support further wind development at Nympsfield-the site of one of the most controversial wind projects built so far in the UK. An independent opinion survey by Robertson Bell Associates finds that 70% locally support Western Windpower's proposal for three more turbines alongside its existing Enercon unit. Sixteen per cent oppose the project. The survey also shows support for buying electricity direct from local turbines, with 42% "likely" to want to, while 32% say "it depends." Only 5% say they would be unlikely to. The survey was commissioned by Triodos Bank, the Gloucestershire Water & Energy Forum, the British Wind Energy Association and Western Windpower. "While objectors to wind farms have made a lot of noise and fuss, this survey reveals them as a tiny minority," says Simon Roberts of Bristol based Triodos Bank.
