Switzerland is laying the groundwork for green credit trading with an eco-power labelling system. Working group Ökostrom has drafted a business plan for an eco-labelling program, reports Christine Bratrich of the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology. Two labels will be introduced: "ReEnergy," for electricity from renewable energy sources, and "EcoLeader of ReEnergy," to identify so called "ecological leaders," the companies that fulfil the highest ecological standards. In phase one, now completed, wind energy and photovoltaics were labelled. In phase two, with a November deadline, all energy generation systems except pumped storage and hydro power will be labelled, and in phase three, the basis will be created for labelling hydro power. The labels are expected to create a competitive advantage for renewables, says Bratrich.
