Nuclear generator takes step into wind power commissioning 1 MW turbine

Finnish power company Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) has completed its first steps into the wind sector with the commissioning of a 1 MW turbine supplied by WinWind at a site near its two 1000 MW nuclear reactors at Olkiluoto, Eurajoki. "We are quite sure this initial step into wind powered energy will not be TVO's last," says Juhani Niinimaki of the Eurajoki municipal authority. "Our research shows there are areas of Eurajoki very suitable to support commercial-scale wind farms and it is our plan to work with developers." The municipality is the latest to adopt a partnership approach to wind power development. Two months ago, the municipality of Uusimaa produced a feasibility study advocating the development of two or three onshore wind plant near its coastline. It also recommends that a joint venture development company be established.
