Scottish celebrities back wind power as part of campaign
1 May 2005
Scottish celebrities are backing wind power as the UK wind industry's campaign to win hearts and minds is rolled out in Scotland. Alex Kapranos, lead singer of the band Franz Ferdinand, actor Brian Cox, chef Nick Nairn and broadcaster Magnus Magnusson have thrown their support behind the campaign to counter the publicity and myths generated by the anti-wind lobby. Results of a poll released at the launch of the Embrace the Revolution campaign reveal that the celebrity champions are among the majority of Scots who are in favour of wind power. The survey by NOP World shows that 73% agree wind farms are necessary to help meet the country's energy needs. The most poetic endorsement comes from Magnusson. "The wind is pure energy, raw and restless, an endlessly sustainable natural resource. Let's hug it, let's harvest it," he says. "Wind turbines, elegant giants of engineering, can harness that wild energy for our own purposes, subject only to appropriate environmental considerations."
