The picture that emerges from our overview this year of the status of 17 national wind energy markets is of a business on the brink of another giant lurch forward. Granted, the annual rate of growth for wind power did slow in 2000, but this year it is set to break all records and could reach 40%. As if to underscore the trend, within hours of press deadline three major announcements were made: Shell is aiming for a global role in wind; an American utility wants 1000 MW of wind capacity; and an 80 MW order was clinched. Wind is on a roll.
