A survey of 342 households which are neighbours to a random selection of 102 wind turbines in Denmark has revealed that claims of noise and visual nuisance from wind plant are not as great as suggested in the press. The survey, undertaken by the research institute of the county and district council authorities in Denmark, Amternes og Kommunernes Forskningsinstitut (AKF), revealed that: 77% can hear their local wind turbine; 86% say this is not a nuisance when they are inside while 63% say they register some form of nuisance when outside their houses; 71% say their local wind plant fits well into the landscape, 17% say it has a negative effect on the landscape while 2% say it adds to the scenic value of the landscape. The AKF report establishes the cost of the registered nuisance factor as DKK 0.004 ($0.0006/kWh), calculated from the sum people would be prepared to part with to have an offending wind turbine removed.
