Campaigners in favour of wind energy in West Yorkshire are bucking the trend which has seen a proliferation of pressure groups opposing wind developments throughout the country. FRESH -- For Renewable Energy Sources in Calderdale -- hopes to counter some of the misinformation spread by the well organised anti lobby in its area. The group kicked off its campaign with a picnic at Ovenden Moor wind farm, which received local and national radio coverage. Around 100 people attended throughout the afternoon, claims Kate Witham, one of the group's organisers. "People liked the wind turbines and were glad to have the opportunity to show their support," she says. Witham, who has a background of anti-nuclear campaigning, explains that it is not enough merely to oppose nuclear power without putting forward an alternative. "We are campaigning for all kinds of renewable energy, but at the moment are concentrating on wind because that is the technology that needs most support." Anti-wind farm groups in the area are vociferous and information about wind has been extremely one-sided, she says. Despite five separate developments in the area -- mostly at the planning stage -- she believes the public has not been consulted widely enough.
