German tower firm doubles capacity

A new steel tower construction facility will open at Schwerin, Germany, at the start of 2009, reports KGW Schweriner Maschinen und Anlagenbau, which has been building wind turbine towers since 1993. The new factory will see production capacity double from 500 to 1000 tower sections a year. Production for 2008 is fully booked, says the company's Helmut Welle. One of its major customers is turbine manufacturer Nordex, based at the port of Rostock, 100 kilometres north of Schwerin in eastern Germany.
